Family says Beaumont shooting victim Chyna Ryan improving in Houston hospital.Shooting victim recovering, family outraged by gun violence Beaumont — A Beaumont mother said she was on the phone with her daughter just minutes before a shooting at an apartment complex left the 24-year-old woman hospitalized and her friend dead.Chyna Ryans’ family said she is recovering and improving at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Her friend, 25-year-old Nastazia Corbin, died earlier this week at the same hospital after suffering a traumatic brain injury in the shooting.Police have arrested 18-year-old Drevion Wilson on a charge of aggravated assault, but investigators expect to upgrade one charge to murder.A 15-year-old is also in custody.Police said Wilson and the younger teen were shooting at each other following an argument Monday afternoon in the parking lot of an apartment complex on West Virginia Street.Investigators said Wilson returned to the scene after the shooting and was taken into custody.Police said several juveniles witnessed the shooting and investigators are looking for them to learn more.Ryans’ aunt, Briana Henderson, said the family is speaking out from first-hand experience about the impact of gun violence.“How many more people have to get shot or hurt or wounded behind teenagers and kids having guns,” Henderson said.Ryans’ mother, Iesha Louis, said her daughter was visiting a friend at the Virginia Flats apartments on Monday when the shooting happened.Louis said she had spoken with her daughter shortly before the gunfire.“I had actually just got off the phone with her like five minutes. Her and her friends were planning on what they were about to do with the kids-go swimming or take them bowling-and then five minutes later her friend calls me screaming,” Louis said.Louis said the call was devastating.“That was a hard day. It’s very hard day.I went in rage like, "who did this to her?” she said.Louis said Ryans was shot in the face and was rushed to the hospital by a friend.“Thank God for her friend Brianna Holland. We do want to tell her thank you and send her her flowers because without her who knows what would have happened if she wasn't there,” Louis said.Ryans remains hospitalized and does not know Corbin died Tuesday, her family said.Louis said her daughter is stable mentally but still faces a long road to recovery.“She’s okay mentally.Health-wise, it’s a touch-and-go, day-by-day thing, you know. She still has surgeries to go through,” Louis said. The family said Ryans and Corbin had been friends for years and spent time together with their children.Louis said the family is also thinking about Corbin’s loved ones.“We want to extend our condolences to the other family because like we said, she doesn’t know about her friend right now, and she won’t be able to be at the funeral,” she said.Ryans’ family said they want the suspects held accountable and called for tougher action against gun violence involving teens.“We need justice served. We need the judges, the DAs, everybody to start cracking down on these children,” Henderson said.Louis said the shooting has permanently changed their lives.“Give them time.Don’t give them 20 years. They took a life. They affected a life.My daughter’s life is probably never going to be the same,” she said. The family said they hope Ryans can return home soon to be with her family, including her two young children. They have set up a GoFundMe account to help with medical expenses. Our family is asking for prayers, support, and assistance for our beloved Chyna Ryans, an
