Dane County Board urges UW Health to resume gender-affirming care for transgender youth.Dane County Board urges UW Health to resume gender-affirming care for transgender youth MADISON, Wis.(WMTV) - The Dane County Board of Supervisors is calling on UW Health and Children’s Wisconsin to resume providing gender-affirming care to transgender and gender-diverse youth. The board approved a resolution Thursday urging the health systems to restart access to puberty blockers and hormone therapy for patients under 18 to the fullest extent permitted by law.According to the resolution, UW Health paused prescribing puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors on Jan.14, citing a federal directive and concerns about potential enforcement actions that could affect Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement. The county board argues the legal landscape has since changed following federal court action and says major medical associations support access to gender-affirming care for adolescents when deemed clinically appropriate and provided under qualified medical supervision.“The loss of this healthcare has permanent, irreversible impacts on patients’ lives, and the decision to end it abruptly has caused real harm,” Supervisor Aria Trucios, who authored the resolution, said in a statement.“At no point has UW Health had a legal duty to cease providing this healthcare. We call on UW Health to put the wellbeing of their patients first by resuming care to the fullest extent permitted by law.” The resolution states some families affected by the pause have sought care from alternative providers, including providers outside Wisconsin, while others have experienced uncertainty and disruptions in care.“Every resident of Dane County deserves access to safe, evidence-based health care that is free from political interference,” Dane County Board Chair Patrick Miles said in a statement.“With this resolution, the board sends a clear message that the health, dignity, and wellbeing of transgender and gender-diverse youth must be prioritized.” In addition to urging providers to resume care, the resolution calls on UW-Madison to conduct a transparent review of the decision, encourages continued collaboration among providers, families and community stakeholders, and directs the county’s lobbyist to advocate for legislation protecting the rights and health care access of transgender and gender-diverse individuals.UW Health’s policy remains unchanged as of Friday evening.Click here to download the WMTV15 News app or our WMTV15 First Alert weather app.Copyright 2026 WMTV.All rights reserved.
