State, Calcasieu superintendents speak about recent improvements in La.education.State, Calcasieu superintendents speak about recent improvements in La.education LAKE CHARLES, La.(KPLC) - Louisiana’s education ranking jumped from 49th to 32nd, the highest ranking in state history.State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley and Calcasieu Superintendent Dr.Jason VanMetre spoke to The Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana about the recent improvements and state of the Louisiana education system at their monthly luncheon.Along with the jump from 49th to 32nd, Louisiana is ranked first in reading growth and second in math among the States.“So, the emphasis the state has placed on literacy in the last couple of years has really made a difference,” said VanMetre.Brumley touched on the civic education students receive in the state of Louisiana.After completing a year of civics classes and passing an exam before graduation students are able to receive a Freedom Seal on their high school diploma.“Students in Louisiana are really blessed to be able to get such a rich history and appreciation of our country and the civics that outlines that,” said Brumley.The students also receive a red, white and blue cord to wear for graduation if they qualify for the freedom seal.Copyright 2026 KPLC.All rights reserved.
