Felon stopped for smoking weed on the street pleads guilty to illegal gun possession.Felon stopped for smoking weed on the street pleads guilty to illegal gun possession WASHINGTON (WJLA) — A previously convicted felon pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a gun after police first caught him reportedly smoking weed in the street.According to the District of Columbia United States Attorney's Office, U.S.Park Police officers were patrolling around Dix Street and 63rd Street NE in February when they spotted a man holding a cigarette and breathing out smoke.Police made a U-turn and approached the man, identified as previously convicted felon Daveion Antonio Ervin."The officers exited their cruiser, approached Ervin, and detected the strong odor of marijuana," the US Attorney's Office said."Ervin attempted to flee the scene when officers ordered Ervin to stop.Ervin discarded the hand-rolled cigarette and continued running." SEE ALSO: Virginia man caught after alleged abduction, carjacking and multi-state police chase But officials said he soon tripped and fell during a brief pursuit, and when officers caught up and told him to stay on the ground, Erwin told officers he had a gun but no license to carry it.Officer said they took a Springfield Armory XDS-9 9mm pistol from his front waistband, loaded with one round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine.US Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced in June that Erwin pleaded guilty to one count of felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.He has a sentencing scheduled for September 10.
