Louisiana lawmakers vote to shift DA funding away from Orleans Parish, distribute the money among other districts | wwltv.com.BATON ROUGE, La.— The Louisiana Legislature passed a bill Sunday that would shift state funding away from the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office and send more money to prosecutors in other parts of the state. As our partners at Nola.com report, House Bill 719 would add 60 new state-funded “warrants” — $50,000 allocations used to pay assistant district attorneys — across Louisiana while cutting 10 warrants from Orleans Parish. The bill now heads to Gov.Jeff Landry’s desk.Under the proposal, East Baton Rouge Parish would gain 16 new warrants and the district serving St.Tammany and Washington parishes would receive 14 more.Orleans Parish currently has 83 warrants and is expected to lose about $500,000 under the plan.According to Nola.com, Rep.Peter Egan, a Republican from Covington who sponsored the bill, said the changes are meant to better distribute resources to understaffed prosecutors’ offices. But lawmakers from New Orleans strongly criticized the late amendment that reduced Orleans funding, arguing it unfairly targets the city and could hurt crime victims by reducing prosecutorial resources.
