Princeton native to attend KDA summer internship to work with staff.FRANKFORT — Thirteen college students, including one from Princeton, will intern this summer at the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to assist KDA staff and the state commissioner with agricultural needs.The KDA summer internship program aims to provide opportunities for students to gain first-hand experience, knowledge and understanding of the governmental process through pre-professional work in various fields, according to a KDA news release.From Princeton, Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine student Laken White will attend the internship.Interns work with KDA employees and Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell to learn programs of departments that make up KDA, with the goal of allowing students to gain insight into careers in the ag industry, according to the news release.Interns attend livestock shows, proclamations, conferences and travel with Shell to various events.They work with employees to develop social media promotions, help teach the public about farm safety, and work with the senior’s market and the junior chef programs.“The best way to really learn about a career is to work side-by-side with the employees doing the job each and every day,” Shell said in the news release.“This is exactly what KDA’s internship program offers college students.Interns gain a unique learning experience that could launch a lifelong career in a variety of ag-related fields.It’s a great stepping stone and that we are excited to provide.” Internships are available to students in majors directly and indirectly related to agriculture, the news release stated.Career paths of current and former interns include agriculture, education, computer science, marketing, public relations and pre-law.
