Lawsuit Claims Man Who Killed Nurse at Tuscaloosa Hospital Was Refused Care Before Shooting, DCH Denies.Lawsuit Claims Man Who Killed Nurse at Tuscaloosa Hospital Was Refused Care Before Shooting, DCH Denies The mother of the man accused of fatally shooting a nurse during a robbery attempt outside of a Tuscaloosa hospital claims he was denied care in a new lawsuit filed on Friday. As the Thread has reported, 41-year-old Mathew James Taylor was arrested shortly after the killing and charged with murdering 27-year-old Ada Doss.He was jailed without bond, and after a grand jury indicted him on the same charge, the conversation has shifted to whether or not Taylor is mentally fit to stand trial.Jail and court records indicate he has been transferred to Tuscaloosa's Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility. As the criminal case slowly takes shape, Taylor's mother filed a seven-count negligence lawsuit against DCH in civil court on Friday. In her complaint, Amanda Taylor said her son, whom she refers to as Michael instead of Matthew, "has been in and out of mental institutions throughout his life, including at mental facilities owned and operated by DCH Healthcare Authority, such as North Harbor." She claims the 41-year-old suffered an acute and severe mental health crisis on May 12th and was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment."Defendants knew or should have known that Michael was suffering from an emergency psychiatric condition.Despite his obvious psychiatric distress, Defendants refused to provide emergency screening, stabilization, treatment, or admission," she wrote."Defendants rejected Michael and caused him to leave the emergency department without adequate evaluation.Following his rejection, Michael remained on or near hospital property for several hours." The lawsuit claims Taylor obtained an improperly secured firearm and, soon after, shot and killed Doss during a "severe psychiatric crisis." The lawsuit accuses DCH of violating the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act and the Rehabilitation Act, of ADA Discrimination, negligence, and wantonness. On Monday, Briana Houston, the interim Vice President of Marketing and Communications for DCH, said they cannot say much about the lawsuit but denied that Taylor ever entered the hospital."The loss of our colleague continues to weigh heavily on every member of our DCH family. She was a dedicated nurse and case manager who gave her professional life to caring for others, and her absence is felt every day by her colleagues, her patients, and the community she served," Houston wrote."We have been made aware of a civil complaint in connection with her death filed by the family of the alleged assailant. While it would be inappropriate for us to comment on the specifics of pending litigation, we want to be clear: DCH takes its responsibilities to its employees and to the community with the utmost seriousness. We will review the complaint carefully and respond through the appropriate legal process." "We would note that Mr.Taylor never entered our emergency department or any other hospital facility, was never registered as a patient, and never presented himself for care from DCH on May 12, 2026.We will allow the legal process to address the remaining facts in due course," she continued."What we can say without reservation is that we remain fully committed to the safety of every person who works at, visits, or receives care at our facilities. The ongoing security enhancements we have implemented since May 12th are real, and not contingent on the outcome of any legal proceeding. The enhancements of our security protocols will continue with input from our employees and leading security experts. Our thoughts remain with those who have been touched by the tragic loss of our colleague."
