Iowa politicians react to nearly $1.8B Justice Department fund to compensate alleged victims of ‘weaponization’.Iowa politicians react to nearly $1.8B Justice Department fund to compensate alleged victims of ‘weaponization’ CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Amidst growing opposition to a nearly $1.8 billion fund established as part of President Donald Trump’s settlement with the IRS, Iowa lawmakers have voiced their thoughts. The fund is being called the “Anti-Weaponization Fund” and is aimed at compensating people the president claims were previously mistreated by the Justice Department. Those speaking out, including Republican lawmakers, cite concerns that those people could include people who attacked law enforcement officers during the January 6 riot at the Capitol. Two police officers present that day are suing to stop the creation of the fund.President Trump pardoned nine Iowans charged in connection to the attack in one of the first actions of his second term according to KCCI.Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican and Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said it will likely be a “big subject” at the next oversight meeting with acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.“From the standpoint of the program itself, everybody knows that the forces of the federal government should not be used for political weaponization against your political enemies,” he said.Grassley also stated that each case would need to be judged and reviewed - pointing out that there’s no limit to who can apply for reimbursement from the fund.Representative Ashley Hinson, a Republican representing Iowa’s Second Congressional District, said she has heard from Iowans who claimed the government was being weaponized during the Biden administration.“I am encouraged that this is the avenue they are taking,” said the congresswoman.“I do want to make sure there is good oversight here and I will continue to do that in my role as an appropriator over the Department of Justice.“ She also applauded Sen.Grassley’s work to “showcase some of the weaponization that has happened.” Copyright 2026 KCRG.All rights reserved.
