Brooklyn Heights police K-9 to be funded through donation honoring fallen Euclid Officer Jacob Derbin | wkyc.com.BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Ohio — Brooklyn Heights is set to receive funding for its first police K-9 through a donation made in honor of fallen Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin.During the Brooklyn Heights Village Council meeting on Tuesday, June 2, Jacob's mother, Dawn Derbin, plans to present a donation to sponsor the purchase of the police department's first K-9.The donation comes just days before what would have been Jacob Derbin's 26th birthday on June 4.Derbin was killed in the line of duty on May 11, 2024, while responding to a report of aggravated menacing on East 211th Street in Euclid. The suspect, 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, fled the scene on foot and later died during a standoff in Shaker Heights.“This donation is deeply personal to me,” said Dawn Derbin.“Jacob loved this village. He loved police work.He loved helping people.Becoming a K-9 officer was one of his biggest goals and dreams. To help bring Brooklyn Heights its very first police K-9 puppy, on what would have been his 26th birthday, feels like bringing a piece of Jacob home.” According to the Derbin family, Jacob grew up in Brooklyn Heights and came from a family with deep ties in the village.Dawn Derbin served Brooklyn Heights for 15 years as a firefighter and paramedic.Jacob's grandfather, Dennis "Papa" Derbin, served 27 years as a Brooklyn Heights police officer and Jacob's uncle continues to work in law enforcement. The family said Jacob developed a passion for police work at an early age and often attended community safety events and police functions with his grandfather.Additionally, one of Jacob's longtime goals was to become a K-9 officer.“For our family, this village has never just been a place on a map,” Dawn Derbin said.“It is home.It is where my boys were raised. It is where Jacob learned what it meant to serve others.I hope this K-9 reminds people of the kind of young man Jacob was — loyal, courageous, compassionate, and always willing to protect others before himself.” The donation will specifically fund the purchase of the K-9.Brooklyn Heights police will continue accepting donations to help cover additional expenses associated with launching the department's K-9 program, including training, equipment, veterinary care and other operational costs.Anyone who wants to support the Brooklyn Heights Police Department’s first K-9 may donate HERE or by making checks payable to the Brooklyn Heights Service Clubs and noting “BHPD K-9” in the memo section.
