Warren Judge John Chmura arraigned on OWI, high-BAC charge.MACOMB COUNTY, Mich.– A Warren judge who was arrested in March for drunken driving with a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit appeared in court for an arraignment over Zoom on Wednesday.Judge John Chmura was charged under Michigan’s high-BAC drunken driving law on March 25 after reportedly rear-ending a SMART bus while under the influence of alcohol.The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m.in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and Triangle Drive in Sterling Heights.Recommended Videos As part of his bond conditions, Chmura must refrain from using any controlled substances or alcohol and must submit to alcohol monitoring via Soberlink twice a day in the morning and evening.Police body-camera footage from officers at the scene shows Chmura identifying himself as a judge with the 37th District Court before struggling to perform sobriety tests and initially refusing to take a breathalyzer test.A blood test later revealed his BAC was .196, according to prosecutors.Chmura told police he was coming from an event, and when asked how much he had to drink, replied: “I don’t know.Evidently too much.” Two bus passengers were treated for minor injuries at the scene, police said.Since Chmura is a Macomb County judge, the St.Clair County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the case.A pretrial has been set for 11:30 a.m.on July 15.
