More than 97,000 Connecticut residents to have $315M in medical debt erased.More than 97,000 Connecticut residents should receive letters in the mail this week informing them that some or all of their medical debt has been eliminated, according to a news release Tuesday from Gov.Ned Lamont.Nearly $315 million in medical debt held by Connecticut residents will be forgiven, the result of a partnership between the state and the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, the release says.Advertisement Article continues below this ad “Nobody should go broke just because they got sick, but our healthcare system too often leaves families on the hook for bills they simply can’t pay,” Allison Sesso, president and CEO of Undue Medical Debt, stated in the release.This is the fourth round of the initiative, which since 2024 has removed $513 million in medical debt for 252,000 Connecticut residents whose income is at or below 400% of the federal poverty level, or who have medical debt that is 5% or more of their income, the release said.The federal poverty level is an annual income at or below $33,000 for a family of four.The initiative's first round, launched in December 2024, erased about $30 million in medical debt for approximately 23,000 people.A second round in May 2025 eliminated more than $100 million for 100,000 residents, while a third round in December 2025 erased more than $63 million for 40,000 people, according to the release.Advertisement Article continues below this ad “Medical debt is a burden carried by families in every Connecticut community, but it disproportionately affects working-class families,” Lamont stated in the release.Want more Norwalk Hour?The program is funded through legislation approved by the state legislature and signed into law by Lamont, providing $6.5 million in funding obtained through the federal American Rescue Plan Act.Advertisement Article continues below this ad Connecticut residents who have had some or all of their medical debt eliminated will receive a letter bearing both the Undue Medical Debt brand and the state seal, according to the release.Letters were mailed beginning Monday and should be received over the next several days, the governor's office said.
