This Day in History: Two influential figures remembered in Vermont.This Day in History: Two influential figures remembered in Vermont BURLINGTON, Vt.(WCAX) - Two influential figures with deep ties to Vermont are being remembered on this day in history for the mark they left on religion and local journalism.On May 27, 1987, thousands of Buddhists gathered in West Barnet for the funeral of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.Widely credited with helping bring Buddhism to the United States after escaping from Tibet, Trungpa Rinpoche became a central figure in the spread of Tibetan Buddhism in the West.He later founded the Karme Choling Meditation Retreat in Barnet, which drew students and practitioners from around the country and continues to serve as an important retreat space for Buddhist study and practice.Also on this day in history, May 27, 2015, WCAX-TV lost one of its defining voices.Former longtime anchor and news director Marselis Parsons died after a battle with skin cancer, five years after his retirement.Over a 43-year career at Channel 3, Parsons won numerous media awards, helped make WCAX one of the most trusted sources of local news in Vermont, and mentored dozens of young journalists who went on to careers across the country.Copyright 2026 WCAX.All rights reserved.
