US President Donald Trump’s noticeably fuller and brighter hair at a Las Vegas event has sparked a wave of wig rumours, jokes and memes online, with social media users debating what caused the dramatic change in his familiar hairstyle. There is, however, no confirmed evidence that Trump was wearing a wig.
Trump appeared at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 5, where he spoke about his administration’s economic policies. According to NDTV, the president discussed tax breaks on tipped income, lower prescription drug prices and his “Trump accounts” during the event.
But much of the online attention quickly shifted from Trump’s speech to his hair. Viewers noticed that his blond hair appeared thicker, more voluminous and shinier than usual.
Photos and videos from the appearance were widely shared on social media. Some users joked that Trump had suddenly grown a full head of hair, while others asked whether he had started wearing a hairpiece.
The speculation remained unproven. A change in styling, lighting, hair products or colour could also make hair appear different in photographs and video. No credible source has established that Trump wore a wig at the Las Vegas event.
The renewed fascination also reflects how closely Trump’s hairstyle has been linked to his public image. He has openly acknowledged trying to conceal his bald spot. In 2018, he joked at the Conservative Political Action Conference that he worked hard to hide it.
Trump has also previously used medication for male-pattern hair loss. His former physician said in 2018 that the president took a drug to help combat hair loss. Recent medical records released by the White House, however, have not listed that medication.
The latest hairstyle debate has also drawn comments from Trump’s estranged niece, Mary Trump. She compared his fuller hairstyle to Herby the Dentist, a character from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, during an appearance on a SiriusXM host’s YouTube programme.
Trump’s health has separately been the subject of public attention this year. A White House medical report released in May said he remained in “excellent health” after an annual examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
For now, the mystery surrounding Trump’s fuller hair remains exactly that: a mystery. What is clear is that a hairstyle change at a political event has once again turned the US president into the centre of an internet meme storm.
