Door County Historical Society garners state honors
STURGEON BAY (WLUK) -- The state historical society is honoring the Door County Historical Society with two awards.
Some might call Wednesday "Wisconsin Historical Society Awards" day.
"We will be welcoming representatives from the Wisconsin Historical Society including director and CEO Christian Overland," said Amy Frank Door County Historical Society Executive Director.
Door County Historical Society Executive Director Amy Frank says the first ceremony will honor the rehabilitation at the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek.
"It's the cherry on top. We're so very proud already of the work that we've done up there. And to then be recognized on a state level, it just makes it all that much sweeter," she said.
Frank says the next award will be presented at Heritage Village in Sturgeon Bay. It is named after Reuben Gold Thwaites.
"Reuben Gold Thwaites was the first director of the Wisconsin Historical Society, and a very well-known historian in Wisconsin," said Frank.
Frank says it's the first time Door County has been awarded the Reuben Gold Thwaites. She says the special honor coincides with Door County's Historical Society celebrating 100 years.
"It's a very cool thing, and we are so excited to have this trophy that we can have for the entire year. It really does speak to the organization as a whole, and all the people who came before us. And the volunteers, and all the helpers and all the friends along the way kind of led to this moment of us receiving this award," she said.
Door County Historical Society officials say they will have the trophy on display at its office in Sturgeon Bay.
