Mass. teacher arrested, charged with possession of child pornography

A Belmont, Massachusetts, teacher was arrested Saturday and is facing charges of possession of child pornography, state police announced.

Leon Dyer, 45, of Belmont, is facing two counts of possession of child sex abuse material.

According to police, Dyer was a teacher at Belmont Middle School and worked at a camp in Middleborough.

Belmont Public Schools Superintendent Jill Geiser sent out a letter to the school community Sunday, announcing Dyer's arrest.

The district confirmed that Dyer is not permitted on school property and had all school-issued accounts suspended. The district also confirmed that a background check was done on Dyer prior to his hiring.

"Our primary concern, as always, is the well-being and safety of students. We have no information at this time to suggest that this individual engaged in any inappropriate conduct with BPS students, on BPS property, or otherwise in connection with his employment with BPS," the statement read. "We are working with the Belmont and State Police and will share information with the BPS community whenever we are able. We aim to be as transparent as possible throughout this process."

Dyer will be arraigned Monday in Cambridge District Court.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
