Framed Declaration of Independence replica, quilt at Nebraska Capitol to mark America’s 250th anniversary

LINCOLN, Neb. — Gov. Jim Pillen joined officials and members of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution on Wednesday to unveil items celebrating America’s 250th anniversary that will be on display in the Capitol.

Pillen recognized the local chapters of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution before unveiling a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence.

Members of the Lincoln Quilters Guild also presented a quilt created for the occasion.

The quilt features 250 star squares, with each guild member designing their own squares. Each square was required to include a star of some kind and red, white or blue fabric.

“It’s just a lot of fun to see that, to be a little symbolic of our country and all of our differences and that kind of thing that we have different choices and beliefs and all of that, but that it can all come together,” said Tammy Hensley, Lincoln Quilters Guild member and quilt designer. “We can all make it come together if we work hard enough.”

The quilt and the framed Declaration of Independence will be on display in the governor’s reception room. The quilt will be auctioned off in November, with proceeds going to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary, an organization that helps homeless veterans.
