Authorities say two drivers died at the scene, while four people were taken to the hospital. Among the people transported, one had serious injuries, another had moderate injuries, and two had minor injuries. Another person declined transport, the fire department said. Police described those deceased and injured only as adults.
Oxnard police Sgt. Michael Gens said the pickup driver, who was taken to the hospital, is suspected of impairment by alcohol or drugs, though the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
"Based on witness statements, we do believe that the driver of the pickup was speeding northbound on Victoria Avenue and did collide into two vehicles, which were then pushed into other vehicles," Gens said.
It's unclear if any arrests have been made.
Victoria Avenue was expected to be shut down in both directions for at least two hours.
