Bell: Strong and Free new Alberta licence plate in fall, new road signs | Calgary Herald.Get the message?This fall.New Alberta Strong and Free licence plate and new Alberta Strong and Free welcome road signs You can save this article by registering for free here .Or sign-in if you have an account.Subscribe now to read the latest news in your city and across Canada.Subscribe now to read the latest news in your city and across Canada.Create an account or sign in to continue with your reading experience.Create an account or sign in to continue with your reading experience.In Alberta, you’re going to see a lot of Strong and Free in the near future at a time when Albertans will decide the direction of this place we call home.As you know from a column in November of last year , there is a new Alberta licence plate coming out.It will no longer read Wild Rose Country.It will read Strong and Free.Strong and Free is Alberta’s provincial motto and it has been a long fight to get it on the plate, at least since 2008 when it was championed by your scribbler and legendary Edmonton Sun scribe Neil Waugh.The smart money says Strong and Free is expected to also be on your actual driver’s licence.Your weekday lunchtime roundup of curated links, news highlights, analysis and features.By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.A welcome email is on its way.If you don't see it, please check your junk folder.The next issue of Noon News Roundup will soon be in your inbox.We encountered an issue signing you up.Please try again Interested in more newsletters?Browse here.Later in this column you’ll hear about the updated details of what’s happening with the licence plate, but first there is more Strong and Free news.On Wednesday, the government of Premier Danielle Smith will announce they are replacing the Welcome to Alberta Wild Rose Country welcome road signs posted at the provincial border with B.C., Saskatchewan, Montana and the Northwest Territories.New signs will go up during the summer and into the fall.The cost is $3.5 million.The old signs have been up for more than 40 years.The new signs will have a wild rose on them and the coat of arms of Alberta and the new words: Welcome to Alberta, Strong and Free.Heck of a lot better than Calgary’s new Blue Sky City signs.Heck of a lot better than the $25 million Alberta taxpayers spent under then-premier Ed Stelmach for the slogan: Freedom to Create, Spirit to Achieve.The old Welcome to Alberta road signs will be sold to people wanting to buy these pieces of history and there is already interest from those wanting to place a bid on one of them.Devin Dreeshen is the point man on the new Strong and Free road signs.He loves them.When Albertans see the new signs as they drive home, Dreeshen hopes they will have “that immense sense of pride in knowing they are Albertans and Alberta is a very special place.” For Dreeshen, Alberta is “the most beautiful place on Earth.” When visitors cross into Alberta he hopes they may feel “a little bit of wonder to see how Alberta is truly strong and free, especially when it comes to other provinces in Canada.” The man who is Alberta’s transportation boss loves the use of Strong and Free, on roads, licence plates and wherever it may appear.“It perfectly embodies the spirit of what it means to be Albertan,” says Dreeshen.He adds Alberta is leading the country, always pushes through adversity “and you’re free to pursue your happiness in Alberta.” Just so you know, when the American state of New Hampshire’s Live Free or Die motto is brought up, he’s a fan of that handle as well.Dreeshen says symbols are important.They have meaning, more meaning than many political stories that are news one day and fish wrap the next.
