RSU hosts international programming contest
CLAREMORE, Okla. — Rogers State University hosted an online international programming competition that brought together university student teams from India, China and Mexico.
The inaugural Intercontinental Invitational Programming Contest (ICPC) RSU Oklahoma was held on Friday and marked a milestone in the university's expanding of international engagement in computer science and STEM education.
Organized by RSU's Department of Technology and Justice Studies, the inaugural contest demonstrated the university's commitment to fostering international collaboration through academic excellence and competitive programming.
The university said teams competed remotely in a rigorous five-hour programming competition designed to challenge their algorithmic thinking, teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
Organizers expect the contest to become an annual event, with participation gradually expanding to include additional countries in future editions.
Modeled after the globally recognized ICPC competition, the contest challenged teams of three students from the same institution to solve a series of complex algorithmic and computational problems under strict time constraints.
During the five-hour online competition, participants solved between eight and 12 problems using programming languages including C ++, Java and Python and demonstrating advanced skills in algorithms, data structures, computational thinking, teamwork and software development.
“This inaugural contest represents an important step in Rogers State University’s commitment to expanding opportunities for students to participate in globally recognized academic competitions,” said Dr. Curtis Sparling, Department Head of Technology and Justice Studies at Rogers State University. “By connecting talented students from multiple countries through a rigorous programming competition, we are strengthening international academic collaboration while inspiring excellence in computer science and innovation.
The university said to ensure fairness and integrity, teams competed remotely under standardized contest rules and monitoring procedures consistent with competitive programming practices.
“Our vision is to establish the ICPC RSU Oklahoma -- Intercontinental Invitational Programming Contest as a premier international platform where talented students from different countries challenge themselves, exchange ideas and build lasting academic connections through competitive programming,” said Dr. Nitindra Chowdary, Assistant Professor and Director of the contest. The success of this inaugural competition provides a strong foundation for an annual international event that will continue to expand by welcoming participants from additional countries while advancing Rogers State University’s leadership in competitive programming, computer science education and global academic collaboration.
All participants received certificates in recognition of their participation, while the top three teams were awarded Certificates of Distinction for their outstanding performance in algorithmic programming and collaborative problem-solving.
“Competitive programming develops the analytical thinking, creativity and teamwork required to solve today’s most challenging computational problems,” said contest judges Dr. Javier Rafful Garfias and Dr. Tetyana Kyrylova.
The university said its initiative to organize this intercontinental invitational contest demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing international collaboration in computer science education.
Bringing together university teams from multiple countries created meaningful opportunities to showcase technical excellence, fostered cross-cultural collaboration and inspired the next generation of computing professionals.
