Brad Pitt Fights for Survival in First Look at New Action Thriller From 'Beekeeper's David Ayer.Brad Pitt has been wooing audiences for decades as the charming leading man who is always as cunning as he's capable. The press has been abuzz for some time about Pitt's new role, which promises to offer a completely different image from what we've come to love (like Cliff Booth!!).This could be Pitt's version of Leonardo DiCaprio's turn in The Revenant.Heart of the Beast follows a combat soldier and his dog trying to fight their way back to civilization after an accident.Pitt's new survival thriller is directed by filmmaker David Ayer, who recently spoke about the film with GQ.Ayer was beyond impressed with Pitt, who at 62 years of age could take on such a physically demanding role."He's a beast. He was vulnerable and exposed himself in a way that I haven't seen before," Ayer told GQ, "A constant theme from people who have seen the film is just how raw and believable and profound his performance is." The movie is much more than just a guy and his dog, asserts Ayer, "There was just something profound in the script. It felt like a study in grief, in healing, and of the human heart. So I had to do it." Heart of the Beast is a big deviation for both Ayer and Pitt, who worked together on 2014's Fury.Pitt is coming off of F1's success, while Ayer is following two action-packed Jason Statham vehicles, including The Beekeeper. The survival adventure in Hearts of the Beast takes place in Alaska, but was filmed in New Zealand, and was an understandably demanding shoot.Ayer spoke of the glaciers, the environment, and difficult terrain."No one's ever filmed there before," said Ayer, "and it took a lot of liaising with the New Zealand government and conservationist people to show them that we were going to be good citizens and tread really lightly on what is sacred land." The first-look images are visually stunning, and we can see how Pitt has extended himself in a way that goes against type. While Pitt's performance is being hailed as impeccable, Ayer couldn't say enough about the dogs used for this project. The pups, from New Zealand, come from a group that trains dogs for first responders.Needless to say, the dogs were more comfortable than the crew in a helicopter. The relationship between man and dog, with the two constantly rescuing each other, helps forge a moving story.Ayer said the action-oriented crew members he's worked with left screenings of the film in tears.Of course, any story with an animal will have dog lovers on edge.Ayer can relate as he says, laughing, "The one spoiler I'll forward right now is, don't worry, the dog lives."
