Stockbridge mayor expected to attend first city council meeting since allegations of misuse of funds

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Stockbridge Mayor Jayden Williams, 22, is expected to attend a Stockbridge City Council work session Tuesday night, amid allegations of misuse of city funds and sexual misconduct.

The City Council has moved to restrict Williams’ access privileges while allowing him to continue presiding over council meetings.

Williams and his attorneys are disputing the allegations. In remarks referenced by his legal team, the attorney said the claims involve about $4,000 that they say can be accounted for, and questioned the cost of hiring an investigator.

Williams’ attorney Gerald Griggs is calling for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent forensic review of the city’s spending, including concerns raised by residents about $32 million that “appears to have some questions by the citizens,” Griggs said.

After the council’s action, Williams filed a lawsuit against the city.

Mayor Pro Tem Elton Alexander said the city is still in the middle of the process and that no decisions have been made yet.

Alexander also pushed back on the allegation that $32 million is unaccounted for, saying Stockbridge has a $15 million reserve fund and that the situation stems from an accounting error.

“There was never really any missing money,” Alexander said.

Griggs also said the sexual misconduct allegation may be defamatory because he has not seen evidence filed in court.

The independent investigation could take about a month to complete.
