HONOLULU (Island News) – Firefighters with the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) responded to a building fire incident that was reported at a building located on Ala Moana Blvd on Monday morning. The balcony fire was determined to have started on accident.
The initial alarm sounded at 8:37 a.m., followed by a second alarm at 8:43 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14.
HFD reported that the fire was on a balcony and that the fire was under control at 8:47 a.m., and fully extinguished at 9:11 a.m.
An investigator with HFD was dispatched to the scene, along with the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
It was reported that EMS evaluated two patients, an 88-year-old woman and a 91-year-old man, at the scene; they both refused to be taken.
As a result of the incident, Honolulu police closed Hobron Lane between Ala Moana Blvd and Lipe’epe’e St. at 8:56 a.m. and reopened the lanes at 10 a.m.
An HFD investigator has classified the cause of the fire as accidental, the department reported on Friday, Sept. 18. HFD determined the fire originated in an enclosed patio of the unit. Compression of an electrical cord led to resistance heating of the electrical cord which ignited its insulation and nearby combustibles.
The fire resulted in an estimated loss is $40,000, which includes $30,000 in property damage and $10,000 in damaged contents.
Honolulu police are investigating an attempted murder after a man was found with multiple lacerations at a Waikiki hotel early Monday morning.
