New LaVille school policy will fine students for cellphone use

Indiana Senate Bill 185 mandates classroom cell phone bans statewide. LaVille school staff says the law allows their local penalties

LAKEVILLE, Ind. (WNDU) - LaVille Jr.-Sr. High School is implementing a strict new cellphone ban, effective for the 2026-27 school year.

Students can still bring their phones to school, but they must be stored in a locker during the day, according to a Facebook post from LaVille Community Schools.

If a student is caught with a cellphone, it will be taken by school staff. A parent will then have to pick it up from the school.

Every following offense will cost $25 to get the phone back.

“The fine is not what is in the law. The legislation gave us the ability to make our own administrative rules,” said Kevin Kubsch, director of safety at LaVille Jr.-Sr. High School.

Money generated from the fines will be put toward student incentive programs.

LaVille school leaders say they hope the policy will help students stay more focused in the classroom.
