Police shot and killed a Washington state murder suspect in Seaside on Wednesday, officials said.
Hayes McCloud, 24, of Eastonville, Wash., fired at police officers after they found him in his car on Sunset Boulevard near Greenway Drive, authorities said. The officers returned fire, and McCloud drove away.
McCloud was found dead inside the car a short time later, the Oregon State Police said in a statement. Authorities reported no other injuries.
In a post on social media, Pierce County, Wash., Sheriff Keith Swank appeared to identify McCloud as a suspect in the killing of a 35-year-old man at around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday morning in Puyallup. Half an hour later, McCloud allegedly was involved in another killing at a home in Tacoma before he fled into Oregon in a Toyota 4Runner, officials said.
Police have not publicly identified either of the victims.
Oregon law enforcement on Wednesday received a notice from Washington state police to be on the lookout for McCloud on the northern Oregon coast.
Around 6:20 p.m. Seaside police found McCloud in his car, but as officers from Seaside, Gearhart and Cannon Beach approached the car, McCloud opened fire on the officers, who returned fire, police said.
In his social media post, Sheriff Swank said McCloud died from gunshot wounds sustained in the shootout with police, and added: “I’m glad he was stopped before he killed anyone else.”
The officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, per standard procedure, Oregon State Police said.
The Oregon State Police and the Clatsop Major Crimes Team are investigating the shooting.
