It was an exciting time to be an elementary-level student at Geraldine Thursday morning, as iconic Alabama meteorologist James Spann visited the school to talk with the students there.
There was a great deal of excitement from the students, ranging from pre-K to fifth graders, to hear what Spann had to say and learn about the weather. He explained how weather balloons and radar work and how they help weather forecasters get a better view of what is happening in the atmosphere. Spann also gave the students a crash course in being a weather spotter, such as understanding how to spot the difference between a tornado and other types of cloud formations. He had several videos he showed during his presentation, including lightning striking a tree to emphasize the need to be indoors during stronger storms.
Third grade student Alleigh Pearce and her teacher Marisa Willoughby were recruited to help Spann record a video of everyone in attendance that he would share online. Following Spann’s presentation, school officials presented him with a cake to thank him for the visit.
