KAPAA — The Kauai Federal Credit Union hosted a small group of scholarship awardees and their parents when KFCU distributed $10,000 in scholarships at Kalukalu at 1624 on Friday.Led by Sean Kaley, the president and CEO of Kauai Federal Credit Union, five scholarship awardees — Anucha Kawamura, Sage Keller, Helena Hazelton, Taylee Yoshimoto and Piko Vaughn — were celebrated with a surprise lei from a judge from the Selection Committee to go along with their $2,000 scholarship.Kawamura, a recent graduate of Kapaa High School with Early College honors, is planning to study Environmental Studies with a minor in Business at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.Keller, a student at Middlebury College — awardees were reminded they can still apply for scholarships while in college — is currently pursuing Environmental Policy and History.Hazelton, whose mother, Dana, is a former employee of Kauai Federal Credit Union prior to becoming Gov.Josh Green’s Kauai liaison, graduated from Island School and is heading to the University of San Diego where she will study Neuroscience.Another Island School graduate, Piko Vaughn, was not able to attend the presentation.But he is planning on pursuing Environmental Science and Marine Biology at the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo).Yoshimoto, a recent graduate of Kauai High School, will be heading to the University of Hawaii-Hilo to pursue a degree in Nursing.Kalukalu at 1624 ia a project by the Kauai Federal Credit Union.The mission for Kalukalu at 1624 is to be a gathering place that builds resilience in the community by serving the community’s financial, cultural and well-being needs.For more information, visit the Kauai Federal Credit Union website at www.kauaicreditunion.org.
