As Oklahomans head into the 4th of July weekend, local officials are asking residents to make water safety their top priority.
With lake levels remaining elevated from recent rainfall, GRDA is urging boaters to watch for floating debris, be mindful of their wake and avoid spillways and floodgate discharge areas.
The Grand River Dam Authority said there are no swimming advisories in effect for Grand Lake or Lake Hudson over the holiday weekend after recent water testing found no elevated levels of E. coli.
Officials are also reminding boaters that special boating rules are in effect for those attending Saturday’s Duck Creek fireworks and air show.
According to the GRDA, all watercraft must operate at idle speed and produce no wake in Duck Creek throughout July 4, while boats must also remain outside the FAA-designated “air box” during the air show.
GRDA officials are also encouraging visitors to wear life jackets, designate a sober boat operator, check the weather before heading out, file a float plan and to stay hydrated.
Those floating in the Illinois River are reminded to wear life jackets, avoid floating alone and never to dive from bridges, bluffs or trees.
Water safety tips
The GRDA says Oklahomans can do several things to stay safe this holiday weekend:
- DO let the commercial float operator know if anyone in the party is a first-time or novice floater(s). They may be able to pair them with an experienced paddler/floater or float the person in a raft where there is a lesser chance for capsizing.
- DON’T dive into the river from bridges, bluffs, stream banks, and trees.
- DO WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET. They float; you don’t. Remember, if you are floating the river, children 12 years of age and under are required to always wear a life jacket.
- DO respect the weather and the water. If you get tired while floating, take a break on the bank or a gravel bar to rest.
- DO prepare for the weather. Wear sunscreen and a hat. Stay hydrated.
- DON’T swim or float alone. Stay within sight of companions.
- DO camp only in designated areas.
- DON’T take anything on a float trip that could be lost in the river. Check car keys and other personal effects with the commercial float operator for safekeeping.
