Sheriff’s department partners with Laurel church to host information session on ‘cob’ drug issue JONES COUNTY, Miss.(WDAM) - The Jones County Sheriff’s Department is hosting an information session Wednesday on a drug they said is causing severe problems for local youth.Chase Smith with the narcotics division told WDAM 7 the session will focus on pinaca, also known as “cob.” The synthetic cannabinoid is usually found in liquid form and smoked in vapes and e-cigarettes.Smith said it carries several side effects such as extreme aggression, agitation and violent, erratic behavior. He said they’ve received several reports of students in the county suffering medical emergencies like seizures after using “cob.” The chemical is illegal in Mississippi, and Smith said quite a few people have been arrested for supplying it to young people.“We’ve gotten it off of several kids,” Smith said.“I’ve made some arrests in the 18- and 19-, 20-year-old range who are actually suppliers of the substance. We’ve got leads on several others inside Jones County that are selling this stuff, and we’re hopefully going to see them very soon and have them on the jail docket." The session will be held at Ignite Church, located at 1916 Sandy Lane in Laurel.Doors will open at 6 p.m.Want more WDAM 7 news in your inbox?Click here to subscribe to our newsletter.Copyright 2026 WDAM.All rights reserved.
