North Carolina and Virginia face Weather Impact Day as severe storms move in Tuesday

Sunshine and warmer temperatures return to North Carolina, meanwhile prepare for a severe storm threat Tuesday.

The WXII 12 News First Warning Weather team is tracking the potential for severe weather.

SEVERE STORM THREAT

The greatest potential for severe storms this week arrives Tuesday as a cold front moves into the region. Some of these storms could become strong to severe. There are strong and severe storms moving into the Piedmont now.

STORM RISKS

The primary threats across the Triad on Tuesday will be damaging wind gusts, large hail, and possibly an isolated tornado. These storms are expected to move quickly, making widespread flooding less likely.

We're watching an area of storms that will move south into our area by late morning. This cluster of showers and storms may help to limit our instability and the number and intensity of severe storms that could develop by afternoon. If storms are able to develop in the early to mid-afternoon and continue into the evening, they would likely be fewer and less intense. However, if we have more sunshine in the early part of the day, that would allow the atmosphere to become more unstable, increasing the potential for severe thunderstorms to be very intense and more widespread, thus causing more damage.

There is a 50% chance of rain on Tuesday and a growing threat of severe storms. Meteorologists at the Storm Prediction Center have placed North Carolina and Virginia in a severe thunderstorm threat area for Tuesday. Because of the storm threat, Tuesday is a Weather Impact Day.

Summer warmth returns

Near-normal temperatures are expected to return this week. Muggy conditions will make the air feel more like the low to mid-90s at times. We are back to seeking cooler temperatures inside with A/C running. A brief spell of slightly less humid air may arrive on Thursday.
