Cambria Fire Department holds annual water fight for Labor Day Homecoming

CAMBRIA, Ill. (Heartland News) - The Cambria Fire Department held its annual water fight as part of the 75th Labor Day Homecoming celebration this weekend.

Firefighters faced off with streams of water, trying to push a metal ball to the end of their opponents’ platform, while families watched.

“We just started bringing it back last year,” said Cambria Fire Chief Randall Simmons. “So I mean, it’s fun.”

Simmons said the water fight is a competition firefighters look forward to this year.

The weekend also gave families a chance to reconnect.

Shannon Pennington recently moved from Alaska to Mount Vernon, Indiana to be closer to family.

Pennington said she timed her trip from Alaska to be here during Labor Day with her daughter--a volunteer firefighter who took part in the water fight.

“I wanted to see her do the water fighting and spend time with my granddaughter,” she said.

Pennington said she is very supportive of her daughter.

“I’m really proud of her because I think she’s good at it, and it means a lot to her. It gave her a lot of self-confidence,” she added.

Besides watching the water fight, families also spent time listening to music, looking at the different vendors and spending time together.
