Clark County Board to vote on demolition of historic jail

CLARK COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) - The Clark County Board will soon decide if the historic 1897 Clark County Jail in Neillsville will be demolished.

Board members are scheduled to vote on the matter at a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17th at 7pm at the county boardroom in the courthouse in Neillsville.

According to an email to WEAU from a concerned resident, a county board member says the site could possibly become a paved parking lot for the courthouse, if the historic jail is demolished.

The building is listed on the National and Wisconsin Registers of Historic Places and Neillsville’s Local Historic Register.

The resident said, “We can find other solutions for parking. We cannot recreate our history once we’ve torn it down.”

According to the online county board agenda, the fiscal impact will be around $175,000.
