No fishing for coho salmon in Lake Washington

Effective Sept. 16 and until further notice, there will be no salmon fishing in Lake Washington.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced Tuesday morning that all Coho salmon fishing will close, specifically north of the Highway 520 Bridge (officially named SR 520 Albert D. Rosellini Evergreen Point Floating Bridge), east of the Montlake Bridge, and the portion of the Sammamish River near Kenmore from the 68th Ave. NE Bridge downstream.

“In-season fishery data based on fish counts at the Ballard Locks indicates the coho return to the Lake Washington/Lake Sammamish basin is smaller than forecasted. This rule change is necessary to help ensure broodstock and natural spawning goals are reached,” said the WDFW news release, which added that preliminary salmon counts taken at the Ballard Locks during survey hours are available on the Lake Washington salmon counts website.
