Wisconsin communities mark 25th anniversary of 9/11 with memorials, exhibits, stair climb

Events honor victims and first responders

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - Communities across Wisconsin are holding memorial events this weekend to mark 25 years since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Merrill: Remembrance ceremony at City Hall

The City of Merrill will hold a remembrance ceremony Friday, September 11, at Merrill City Hall, 1004 E. First Street, honoring the lives lost and those who responded following the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The ceremony will include remarks from Merrill Mayor Steve Hass and Lincoln County Board Vice Chair Jesse Boyd, with the Honor Guard present. Bells will ring at 7:46 a.m., marking the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center. Attendees are asked to arrive by 7:30 a.m.

Plover: Fire department memorial walk

Members of the Plover Fire Department will hold a 9/11 Memorial Walk on Friday, September 11, to mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Participants will walk 2,200 steps, representing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers, around the Village of Plover 9/11 Memorial. The walk will be held in two sessions: nine laps at 9 a.m. and 11 laps at 5 p.m. Community members are welcome to join for any portion of the walk.

Tomahawk: Annual tribute at Veterans Memorial Park

The Tomahawk Fire Department, other local emergency service organizations and Tomahawk VFW Post 2687 will host their annual tribute to the events of September 11, 2001. Tomahawk Fire Department and its partners have gathered every year since 2002 on the anniversary of the attacks.

The event will be held at Veterans Memorial Park, 417 N. Fourth St., Tomahawk. A time for private reflection will begin at 10 a.m., with the full ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Speakers this year include former Marine Kevin Hermening, who was held captive at the United States Embassy in Tehran, Iran, for 444 days, and Wisconsin Senate President Mary Felzkowski, along with representatives of law enforcement, fire service and EMS. The VFW will provide an honor guard to sound taps and give a rifle salute.

Green Bay: 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department and Pierce Manufacturing will host the 14th annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Saturday, September 12, at Lambeau Field. More than 2,700 participants are expected this year.

The event honors the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Participants climb the equivalent of 110 stories, the height of the fallen towers, on the stadium’s steps, each carrying a badge with the name and photograph of a fallen firefighter. Proceeds benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m., with the climb starting around 9:30 a.m. and concluding around 12:30 p.m. The climb entrance is at the Kwik Trip Gate at Lambeau Field, 1265 Lombardi Ave., Green Bay. Parking is available in Lot 6 on South Ridge Road.

Marshfield: Memorial ceremony at fire station

The City of Marshfield will hold a 9/11 25th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony Friday, September 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marshfield Fire Station, 514 E. Fourth St.

Hosted by Marshfield Fire & Rescue, the event will honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, as well as first responders and military personnel who have served since. Marshfield Police, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars are partnering in the ceremony, which will include a joint honor guard, tours of the 9/11 Memorial, a light lunch, and fire and police vehicles on display.

The ceremony will be held on the apparatus apron in front of the fire station. Parking at the station will be limited, and attendees are encouraged to park on nearby side streets.

Madison: New exhibits at Wisconsin Veterans Museum

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs is marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with two new exhibits at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.

The first is a temporary window-banner exhibit titled “Compassion Under Fire: Stories of Combat Medics.” The second is an online, virtual exhibit titled “September 11, 2001: Our Veterans Remember,” featuring reactions from oral history interviews with Wisconsin veterans.
