Court to decide resolution in Lily Peters homicide case this week
Carson Peters-Berger faces a final resolution hearing in Chippewa County
CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) — A yearslong criminal case that shook the Chippewa Valley is expected to reach its conclusion Wednesday in a Chippewa County courtroom.
18-year-old Carson Peters-Berger is scheduled for a final resolution hearing on Aug. 26 in the case involving the death of then-10-year-old Lily Peters.
Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell confirmed to WEAU that the scheduled appearance means the case will be resolved without going to trial. The exact terms of the resolution have not been publicly disclosed.

Background of the case
The case began on April 24, 2022, when 10-year-old Lily Peters was reported missing after failing to return home from her aunt’s house in Chippewa Falls.
The following morning, volunteer searchers found the girl’s body in a wooded area near a local walking trail. Police arrested Peters-Berger, who was 14 at the time, later that day.

Years of legal battles
Peters-Berger was initially identified only by his initials due to his age, but court records were unsealed in January 2025, revealing his identity. He pleaded not guilty in December 2024 to adult charges of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault causing great bodily harm, and first-degree child sexual assault.
Following years of defense motions to keep the case in juvenile court, Wisconsin appellate courts upheld the decision to prosecute Peters-Berger as an adult. A jury trial had been scheduled to begin this November, but that trial has been canceled in light of Wednesday’s resolution.
