Sherwood teacher charged with DWI
A Sherwood high school teacher was arrested after police say she left the scene of a vehicle crash with a student and showed signs of being intoxicated on campus Friday, an arrest report from Sherwood police says.
Melanie Gardner, 54, faces charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and having inadequate insurance during an accident, all misdemeanors, the report says.
About 4:04 p.m., police responded to a hit and run accident at a gas station near 10801 Arkansas 107 and found the driver of a Kia Soul who said she was leaving the parking lot of Sylvan Hills High School to go onto Dee Jay Hudson Drive when a white Nissan SUV sideswiped her vehicle on the driver's side, according to the report.
The Kia's driver said the Nissan had damage to the driver's side and extensive damage to the passenger's side front wheel, the report says. The Kia's driver identified the Nissan's driver as Gardner, a teacher at Sylvan Hills High School, according to the report. She told police Gardner had been escorted off campus earlier in the day due to being intoxicated, the report says.
A school resource officer told police Gardner was taken for a drug test earlier in the day under suspicions of being under the influence on campus, according to the report. Police and the school resource officer found Gardner in the school's parking lot observing extensive damage matching the Kia's driver's description, the report says.
Gardner was booked into Pulaski County jail and released the same day on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 27, according to the report.
"While we are unable to comment on district personnel matters, the situation is under review according to appropriate district policy and process, and the district will take any necessary and appropriate actions according to district policies," the Pulaski County Special School District said in a Friday social media post.
"The safety and well being of our students, teachers, and staff remains our main priority, and we will continue working to maintain a safe environment on our campuses," the post says.
LR police say man arrested in stabbing
A man was arrested after police say he stabbed a man in Little Rock early Tuesday morning, an arrest report from Little Rock police says.
David McElroy, 58, faces a charge of first-degree battery, a felony, and is being held for another agency, according to an online inmate roster.
Police responded to Fair Park Boulevard and found a man laying on the street with a stab wound on his left side, the report says. Officers spoke to a witness who said a man with a silver pocketknife was in an altercation with the victim, according to the report.
Police found a man at 5810 W. 12th St., saying somebody "came at him" and he had to defend himself with his knife, the report says. Police found a silver pocketknife on him, according to the report.
McElroy was booked into Pulaski County jail, where he was being held Saturday evening on a $75,000 bail and another $300 bail for the other agency.
