BOONE – The Boone Town Council kicked off the first meeting of July by honoring Dr. Elizabeth “Bettie” Bond’s contribution to the community and the Historic Preservation Commission.
Boone Mayor Dalton George read a resolution honoring Bond’s service on the Historic Preservation Commission, highlighting her dedication to establishing local historical landmarks, like the Downtown Boone Post Office.
“It’s hard to imagine what Boone would look like without all the hours Bettie has put into the services of this town,” George said.
Since the inception of the HPC, Bond has served as chair and vice-chair during her nine years on the committee. She contributed to the HPC’s recognition of the Junaluska Community and supported the designation of the Downtown Boone Historic District in 2021.
“I want to thank you for appreciating me; I really do. That means a lot to me,” Bond said. “But I also want to make sure that you realize that my work with HPC has been a labor of love, and that's because of the team at planning and inspection like Jane Shook and Brandon Wise.”
George presented the signed resolution to Bond before continuing the meeting.
Council approved staff recommendations for two contracts on the River House restrooms and asphalt placement on town streets. Moretz Paving, Inc was awarded the town's FY2026/27 asphalt paving contract at $35 per ton, undercutting a competing bid from Tri-County Paving at $48.75 per ton. Woodcock Construction LLC was awarded the renovation contract for the Rivers House restrooms.
Council also approved a $1,789,650 state grant from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to fund a new water line along Fairway Drive.
Council appointed Brian Juneau to the Human Relations Commission, Tara Brossa to the Tourism Development Authority, Brian Crutchfield as TDA Chair and Tara Brossa as TDA Vice Chair.
The council announced open positions for the following community boards and groups:
- Board of Adjustment - Three alternate positions
- Downtown Boone Development Association - One Council-appointed position
- Historic Preservation Commission - Two regular positions, one student position
- Human Relations Commission - One regular position
- Planning Commission - One regular position
- Sustainability Committee - One regular position, two student positions
- Tourism Development Authority - One position
