The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting in Utqiagvik that left a 25-year-old man dead.
According to Alaska State Troopers, the North Slope Borough Police Department requested assistance with the investigation shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday.
A preliminary investigation found officers were dispatched to a residence at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday for a reported disturbance.
Investigators say officers arrived and saw 25-year-old Utqiagvik resident Cortez Olemaun Jr. standing in an exterior doorway holding a rifle before he went back inside the home.
Troopers say a short time later, Olemaun pointed a rifle at North Slope Borough police officers, who then shot him.
Olemaun was taken to a hospital in Utqiagvik, where he was pronounced dead.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation. Once it is complete, the case will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.
The officer who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with North Slope Borough Police Department policy.
