Father sentenced after drinking vodka and fleeing crash that killed daughter TULSA, Okla.(WKRC) - An Oklahoma father who admitted drinking vodka before a crash that killed his teenage daughter and then fleeing the scene has been sentenced to prison.Elliott Binney was sentenced Monday to five years in prison and five years of probation after pleading guilty to multiple charges connected to the January 2024 crash that killed his 16-year-old daughter, Shelby Binney.Binney pleaded guilty in April to first-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, transporting an open container and two counts of child neglect.According to investigators, Binney lost control of a vehicle carrying family members on Jan.11, 2024, causing it to roll over multiple times.Responding officers found Shelby critically injured after being ejected from the vehicle. She later died from her injuries.Authorities said several juvenile passengers were also involved in the crash.Witnesses told police the vehicle had been traveling at a high rate of speed in rainy conditions and was passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone shortly before the wreck. An open bottle of vodka was found near the vehicle, and investigators said Binney admitted he had taken a drink from the bottle while driving his family home. After the crash, police said Binney fled on foot and was later located about 40 miles away in Checotah.Despite the discovery of the vodka bottle and Binney's admission, prosecutors said there was not enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he was legally impaired at the time of the crash.“What Mr.Binney did after the rollover crash is what got him a prison sentence,” Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said in a statement.
