New details on victims from Chesapeake City boat explosion
Nine people were taken to the hospital after a boat exploded on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal near a popular waterfront restaurant in Chesapeake City, Maryland.
Maryland Natural Resources Police and the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal are investigating a boat explosion that occurred about 4 p.m. July 4 on the canal in Chesapeake City. Police said a 1988 Wellcraft 32-foot cruiser exploded shortly after fueling at Schaefer’s Canal House and Marina.
Four people were flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore with serious burns: a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old male from Elkton, and a 31-year-old male and a 31-year-old female from Newark.
Five people were transported to hospitals by EMS: a 50-year-old male and a 20-year-old female from Elkton, a 23-year-old from Bear and a 21-year-old from Delaware.
Two other victims from Maryland were taken to the hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation by Maryland authorities.
