Huntingdon hosted 7th annual economic development scholars program
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - A total of 23 rising high school seniors went to Huntingdon College on Friday for the seventh Economic and Community Development Scholars Program.
The three-day, two-night program is a partnership between the Huntingdon College Presidential Scholars Program and the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama. The annual program aims to introduce students to the importance of economic and community development across Alabama at the state and local levels.
Students were chosen through their local chambers and the Presidential Scholars Program. During the program, the students had the opportunity to hear from important leaders in economic development.
For a hands-on experience, students split into teams and were assigned an Alabama city to represent. Each team took on public-office roles and used what they know about their hometowns to compete for a corporate headquarters. After completing assignments—including putting together a “town highlight” tour—teams pitched their plans to Leigh and other guests. The top team was recognized with a mock groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremony after Friday’s presentations.
“Each year, this program brings together some of the most promising young leaders from high schools across Alabama, and this year’s cohort is no exception,” Dr. Anthony Leigh, president of Huntingdon College, said. “These students are motivated, thoughtful, community-minded and eager to make a positive impact.”
Vice President for Strategic Academic Initiatives and Director for the Huntingdon College Presidential Scholars Program, Bria Rochelle-Stephens, added to Leigh’s praise, saying, “These students are incredible representations of their communities and their Chambers of Commerce. The dedication and participation these students have shown during the program give me high hopes for the future of community leadership in Alabama.”
