Police are investigating a serious crash on the Gold Star Highway in Groton involving a car and an electric bike early Monday morning.
Groton Emergency Dispatch received several 911 calls regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a car and an e-bike on Gold Star Highway at the intersection of Rogers Road around 12:20 a.m. on Monday, according to the Town of Groton Police Department.
Police learned that a 2001 Saturn L200 and the GT73 Electric Bike collided, knocking the e-bike operator onto the roadway. Arriving officers located the e-bike operator, identified as a 36-year-old New London man, still in the roadway.
The e-bike operator was unconscious but breathing, according to police. Other first responders arrived at the scene and began treating the man, who was transported by Groton Ambulance to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London for suspected serious injuries. Police said the e-bike operator was later released from the hospital.
The driver of the car remained on the scene and called 911 for help, according to police. He reported no injuries.
The initial investigation indicated that the car was traveling east on Gold Star Highway in the area of Rogers Road when the e-bike, which was traveling northbound on Rogers Road, allegedly drove through a posted stop sign at the intersection, police said.
Emergency responders, including Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Center Groton Fire Department, Groton Ambulance Association and L&M Hospital Paramedics, assisted at the scene, according to police.
Members of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit arrived at the scene to assist in the investigation, police said. The investigative team included officers from the Town of Groton Police Department and Stonington Police Department.
Gold Star Highway, in the area of Rogers Road, was closed to traffic immediately following the crash but later reopened.
