Father of convicted Apalachee school shooter files motion for new trial
Colin Gray, father of Colt Gray, is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence.
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Colin Gray — whose son, Colt Gray, killed four people and injured nine others in a mass shooting at Apalachee High School in 2024 — has filed a motion for a new trial.
Colin Gray is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence after being convicted himself on more than two dozen felony charges. Prosecutors said he purchased an AR-15-style rifle for his son despite previous law enforcement warnings about Colt Gray’s mental health.
The attack claimed the lives of students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, and teachers Cristina Irimie, 53, and Ricky Aspinwall, 39.
The motion for a new trial was filed Wednesday by Jimmy Berry and Brian Hobbs, Colin Gray’s attorneys, in Barrow County Superior Court.
The motion for a new trial is based on the attorneys’ assertions that “the verdict is contrary to evidence and without evidence to support it,” “the verdict is decidedly and strongly against the weight of the evidence,” and “the verdict is contrary to law and the principles of justice and equity.”
Colin Gray is serving out his sentence at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, a maximum-security facility located between Atlanta and Macon, which also houses the state’s death row and execution chamber.
Colt Gray is currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
