KONA, Hawaii (Island News) -- Two people were arrested and charged in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins reported in the Kona area during August.
Reid Pangelinan of Waimea and Jacqueline Barnes-Carrick of Kailua-Kona, both 35, were arrested on Monday, Aug. 31, after Hawaii Police Department officers responded to a report of a vehicle possibly connected to an earlier break-in.
Police said officers responded around 2:10 a.m. to the 78-100 block of Ehukai Street and found numerous items inside the vehicle believed to have been recently stolen. The vehicle was recovered as evidence.
Detectives with the department’s Area II Criminal Investigation Section later conducted follow-up interviews with multiple victims and executed a search warrant.
According to police, detectives recovered numerous stolen items connected to five separate vehicle break-ins. They also recovered suspected narcotics, including about 31.2 grams of marijuana and 0.5 grams of methamphetamine.
After the Hawaii County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney reviewed the case on Tuesday, Sept. 1, Pangelinan was charged with:
- Five counts of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle
- Two counts of second-degree theft
- Four counts of third-degree criminal property damage
- Habitual property crime
- Third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug — methamphetamine
- Second-degree promotion of a detrimental drug — marijuana
Pangelinan’s total bail was set at $100,000.
Barnes-Carrick was charged as an accomplice with:
- Five counts of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle
- Two counts of second-degree theft
- Four counts of third-degree criminal property damage
Her total bail was set at $39,000.
Police are reminding the public to remove valuables from unattended vehicles and to lock and secure vehicles when they are left unattended.
