Candlelight vigil scheduled to honor fallen Columbia Police Officer Christopher DeLong
ELGIN, S.C. (WACH) — A candlelight vigil is planned for Wednesday to honor and remember Columbia Police Officer Christopher DeLong Jr.
The vigil will be held at 7 p.m. at the Elgin Community Center, located at 2427 Main St. in Elgin.

The event will honor and remember DeLong’s life and service.
DeLong died in an officer-involved shooting on Saturday in which another officer was injured and the suspect was killed.
DeLong responded Saturday morning to a domestic disturbance on Holstein Lane, Police Chief Skip Holbrook said.

Police said a woman with a restraining order reported that a man was destroying property inside her home.
DeLong learned the man had left the home and got his name, description, and vehicle information.
Officers responded to Hazelwood Road, where police said they found the suspect, Adam Dowdy, matching the description.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating with help from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said they are working to determine what happened when officers encountered Dowdy on Hazelwood Road.
