Southeast Miss. Livestock hosts first Ag Career Day
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - More than 150 young students from the Pine Belt gathered at Southeast Mississippi Livestock Saturday for an event designed just for them.
It was a first-ever Ag Career Day.
The event featured several agriculture education activities for students ages 5-18.
Some who attended had a lot of knowledge about agriculture.
Others only knew a little about the importance of agriculture in Mississippi.
“I think it’s a really cool opportunity for people to just come out and learn about possible career opportunities and more about agriculture,” said Anna Montgomery, 16, of Sumrall, a member of Future Farmers of America.
The event had several product vendors and included demonstrations of veterinary science.
The Career Day also featured a chance for students to win a prize during a “Guess the Weight Contest.”
“Somebody’s going to win a heifer,” said Wade Ladner, a member of the board of directors of Southeast Mississippi Livestock.
“We have four heifers today, that they’re competing in, guessing the weight on five head and four different age groups, and so whoever wins that age group is going to take home a heifer calf today.”
The event featured games and activities to increase knowledge of horses, cattle, sheep, goats and poultry.
Organizers hope to make the Ag Career Day an annual event.
