Portage County man sentenced for attempted murder after trying to kill family member

PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - A Streetsboro man who hit a family member in her 70’s in the head with a pallet and pushed her down stairs, was sentenced to 13 to 18 years in prison Monday.

In June, Richard McNeal pleaded guilty to attempted murder and having weapons while under disability.

The attack happened on April 20, 2025 in the 1600 block of Leslie Dr.

Streetsboro police said McNeal called 911 and said a woman fell down the stairs and needed medical attention; however, when medics arrived, they said her condition was not consistent with just a fall.

Police responded and found the woman had been “violently assaulted.”

The victim, in her 70s, was conscious and told officers some of what happened, according to police.

Police determined McNeal hit the woman in the back of her head with a “heavy hand tool similar to a mallet or meat tenderizer” and pushed her down stairs when she tried to run away.

“She had been struck several times causing critical injuries and defensive wounds,” police said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was treated for serious injuries.
