SLED investigates after armed woman dies during encounter with Spartanburg police
A woman was fatally shot during an encounter with law enforcement after authorities say she pointed a gun at officers.
The shooting happened just before 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at the Georgetown Luxury Townhomes and Apartments on Kensington Drive in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The Spartanburg Police Department was called about a disturbance. When officers arrived,
they encountered a woman who walked out of her apartment and onto the breezeway where she pointed a handgun at the officers. In response, one of the officers shot the woman.
Officers offered aid, and the woman was taken to the hospital. She later died from her injuries. The coroner identified her as 25-year-old Brianna Skiesha Zara Edwards of Spartanburg.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an internal review. That's standard operating procedure.
Spartanburg police requested SLED to investigate. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.

Officer-Involved Shootings in South Carolina
The incident in Spartanburg County is the 25th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026. This is the first officer-involved shooting for the Spartanburg Police Department this year.
In 2025, there were 45 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina. The Spartanburg Police Department had one officer-involved shooting last year.
