100 Years Ago, 1926: Miss Norma Smallwood, Tulsa, Okla., “Miss America, 1926” was in a motor car that figured in a collision yesterday at 69th and Market streets, Upper Darby. Miss Smallwood’s car was being driven west on the West Chester Pike when it collided with one driven by Charles Stillwell, Philadelphia. Miss Smallwood was hurled against the side of the car, but escaped injury. With her were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Maloney, who had accompanied her to a real estate development where she had gone to inspect a home for relatives who are moving east from Tulsa.
75 Years Ago, 1951: The Delaware County Bar Association has arranged a colorful program to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first court held in Media, which was Aug. 25, 1851. The program will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. in Courtroom No. 1, and all participants will wear 1851 costumes, some with wigs and beards. There will be a narration of the first courts from early time to Aug. 25, 1851, by William H. Turner.
50 Years Ago, 1976: Restoration of a 200-year-old, small stone home at Providence Road and Front Street, known as the Minshall House, is expected to begin soon. The structure will be restored to its former elegance just as it was before Media existed. Then it was in Nether Providence. Borough council will open bids on the restoration at a special meeting at 7:30 Thursday. Concern was expressed regarding the future of the historic house about three years ago when the property was almost sold along with adjacent ground.
25 Years Ago, 2001: Delaware County officials are hoping to organize the largest parade in county history to honor the victims of last week’s terrorist attacks, the rescue workers who helped them and the troops mobilizing for military action against the perpetrators. “Our president and our troops will be in the middle of a conflict, and we’re going to show that we’re right behind them,” said U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon, R-7, of Thornbury. “By the time we do this, they’ll be in action and will need our support. We want to have the biggest parade the county has ever seen.”
10 Years Ago, 2016: Eddystone has received approval from Delaware County Council for additional 2015 federal Community Development Block Grant funds to complete a program to furnish and install a series of welcome signs and street name sign replacements, with a requirement from the county to furnish a breakdown of the sole bid from the contractor regarding material, labor, overhead and profit.
