The Birmingham Zoo will soon open a new exhibit featuring axolotls, a species of salamander that remains in its tadpole form for life and is endangered in the wild.
April Robinson, who traveled from Mississippi with her daughter and mother to visit the zoo, shared her excitement about the current displays and the upcoming exhibit.
"We decided to come here because they have a dinosaur exhibit, so with the different dinosaurs, that's what brought us here because she's a fan of dinosaurs, my baby," Robinson said.
Robinson added that her family will return once the axolotl exhibit opens.
"My baby definitely gone like it, she's an animal lover, so we will be back. Set the date, we coming back," she said.
Bill Lang, the Birmingham Zoo's director of marketing, explained the appeal of axolotls, which are popular in video games and have unique regenerative abilities.
"They're in Minecraft, they're in Pokémon, so there's a lot of strong following behind the axolotls, and they're amazing. If they lose a limb or part of a brain, whatever, they can regrow it, so they're really scientific. There's a lot of interest scientifically about them, and plus, they're just darn cute as heck," Lang said.
The zoo hopes the new habitat will encourage visitors to care about the conservation of axolotls in the wild.
Robinson also encouraged other families to visit the Birmingham Zoo, sharing her positive experience.
"It's been a great experience. We walked the whole zoo, and our favorite part was the giraffe. We got to feed the giraffe, so it was a little shaky at first, but it's a great experience. I will tell anybody to please come and bring your kids," she said.
