Parkdale High School AC fixed after students sent home early

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Students at Parkdale High School in Prince George’s County returned to their classrooms Wednesday after school officials said the building’s air conditioning was fixed.

The school dismissed students early Tuesday because of problems with the air conditioning as temperatures climbed across the DMV.

Hundreds of students were sent home around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday as crews worked to address the issue.

School officials now tell 7News the AC has been repaired and students were able to return to their classrooms.

The issue comes as schools across Maryland face concerns over aging facilities and HVAC systems. In Montgomery County, teachers reported classroom temperatures reaching as high as 85 degrees during the heat wave.

Montgomery County Public Schools is also facing a reported $3 billion backlog in maintenance needs.

The Parkdale closure follows a chaotic start to the school year for Prince George’s County, which faced widespread school bus problems during the first week of classes.
